The Potential in You Part 8
Gentleness – “A gentle word
can change everything”

“Where lives change and where life can begin again”

Most of the time, the gentleness that we show, comes out of our mouths.

Gentleness can be defined as the quality of being kind, tender, or mild-mannered.

James 1:19 says, “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to

hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;”

Gentleness is shown by our ability to listen through patience toward others. To

think about our words and the desire of God’s heart as we speak to one another.

The next step is the gentleness to speak, with words that edify and bring life and

not words that hurt or cause pain.

Proverbs 15:1 says, ”A gentle answer turns away wrath,

but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Proverbs 15:4 says, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life,

but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”

Consider the things that gentleness can change. A gentle word can change a

marriage. A gentle word can change any and all relationships. A gentle word can

change horrific situations to the sweet calmness of rest. Learning to not only hear

someone but to truly listen and respond with “Godly” thought and with love.

Let’s look at Proverbs 15:4.

“A soothing tongue is a tree of life…

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” With our words we can create life

or create death. If we look at our individual lives, we must realize that what we

have was created with what we have spoken. With His words, God created the

world’s. What world are we creating around us? Is there peace, love, and joy in

our homes or on our jobs? With the gentleness of your words, you can create your

“atmosphere”. Try it! If someone comes to you irate, calmly explain the issue and

with gentleness, draw them into peace. It works!

“But a perverse tongue crushes the spirit”.

How many people have you known suffering from low self-esteem, anger issues,

or depression? Many times, with research, you may find that the words that were

spoken into their lives have framed their viewpoint of themselves. These negative

words have crushed and suffocated the spirit and people have gone down paths

that have hurt them and alter the future that God intended for them.

God always has a plan. For every unkind and insensitive word spoken over our

lives, God has a plan.

Jeremiah 29:11 (Expanded Bible)

“I say this because I know what [ the plans] I am planning for you,” says the Lord.

“I have good plans for you [ plans for your peace/security], not plans to hurt you

[ for your harm]. I will give you hope and a good future.”

For every broken spirit out there in the world, God has a gentle word from the

Holy Spirit for us. He (the Holy Spirit) was given to us to comfort us and guide us

into all truth and righteousness. The truth that we are more than conquerors, that

we are the children of God and we can do all things through Christ which

strengthens us. If you allow Him, God will erase the hurt and the pain, and maybe

one day even the memory of those negative, hurtful words spoken over you. With

a gentle word, He will strengthen us and build us again into the image of Christ.

We must release the pain into God’s strength and allow His gentle strength to

build us again.

Think about the words that you speak into the lives of others and think about

what you are creating over their life as well as your own. Think about the words

that have been spoken over you and release the painful and hurtful words that

were spoken over you and be healed. Allow the Holy Spirit to speak the gentle

words over your life to bring about the plan of God. Satan meant those words for

evil, but God gives you a hope and a good future.

God has plans for you and it is all good!

Homework:

Think about the words that you speak this week. Before you say a word, think!

What do I want to create, peace and harmony or chaos. “But they started it!” Then

you finish it with gentleness and love and create the world you really want.

Nobody else is in control but YOU!
