The Potential in You Part 9
Self-Control “The Power in You”
“Where lives change and where life can begin again”
Self-Control is the fruit of the Spirit that takes you to your destiny.
Self-Control is self-discipline. God calls one who is self-disciplined, a disciple.
God has called us to be disciples of Christ and to men. It will take self-control and
self-discipline to be successful in your call. Each one of us are called to make a
difference and to be the light to the world and touch lives.
Let’s look at some who did not practice good self-control.
Adam and Eve in the garden, deciding to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of
Good and Evil. We need self-control to do what God has said and not what others,
including Satan, are telling you to do. Have you ever come across that dilemma?
Cain and Abel with their sacrifice to God, Cain killed Abel because of petty
jealousy. Self-Control causes us to recognize our faults and get better, instead of
destroying a life. These consequences happen every day.
Abraham and Sarah with Ishmael, they decided to rush God. Patience is a huge
key to good self-control. Both attributes work hand in hand.
None of these things can be done without the Holy Spirit’s guidance and
strength. Many times we get in trouble because we are leaning upon our own
understanding and going down our own paths. Which leads to frustrations and
1 Corinthians 9:26-27(NLT)
26 So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. 27 I discipline
my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that
after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.
There will be many times that the body will want things that it should not have
and we must learn to say, “NO”. There are situations that could lead us on wrong
paths, that we must learn self-discipline and self-control.
(3) Things that will help with Self-Control
1) Before making a decision, ask yourself, “What would Jesus Do?”. If it is not
something you know Jesus would react to or say, then think about your response
carefully. If you don’t know what Jesus would do, read Matthew, Mark, Luke and
John. These books starting in the New Testament, will help you get a clear picture
of His personality and character. He is our greatest example.
2) Always have a bible or the “Word” near you. In your car, at your job, in your
purse or briefcase. You will need it! A word from God can change everything.
When looking for an answer, expect an answer when you read. The Word is alive
and ready to speak to you every time you need it.
3) Be slow to speak and quick to listen to the voice of the Lord. Hear your
directions before you say, step or react. Learning to slow down and listen will be
your greatest step to Self-Control.
The more you practice these things the quicker they will become second nature to
you. You will learn that God’s way is always the best way.
For example, never respond too quickly, never speak too fast, and hopefully,
never “stepping off” in the wrong direction, will become the “norm” in your life.
The wonderful part of learning self-control and having strong self-discipline, is
that it allows for all the other fruit to flow at such a higher level. Love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and faithfulness flow with such ease
when self-control is mastered. I’m not quite sure if self-control is ever mastered,
however, we should strive each day to harness the power that is within us. Self-
Control is the greatest lesson in life that we can learn for everyday living. We have
the greatest teacher, the Holy Spirit. The Power within us! Use Him each day and
He will teach you the power of Self-Control.
